At Akubic, Earth Day served as both a moment of reflection and a call to action. It’s a time to acknowledge the steps we’ve taken in our sustainability journey and expand our efforts to minimise our environmental impact. It’s also a chance to challenge ourselves—and other businesses—about what more we can do to create a sustainable future.
The global challenge
Governments and policymakers have a crucial role in shaping regulations, but businesses also bear significant responsibility. Whilst undoubtably, the private sector contributes to environmental challenges, it also holds immense potential to drive positive change. By adopting sustainable practices, companies can not only reduce their environmental footprint but also build resilience, attract eco-conscious customers, and future-proof their operations.
Sustainability at Akubic
Delivering end-to-end solutions, sustainably
Our Environmental policy outlines our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint, managing resources efficiently, and fostering environmental responsibility across our supply chain. Our Environmental Strategy provides a structured approach to achieving these goals, with defined short-term and long-term objectives and focusses on carbon auditing, reducing environmental impact, resource efficiency, sustainable innovation, and employee engagement. For example, we have conducted a full assessment of our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with our energy usage. Whilst our electricity source is 100% renewable, we are now converting our gas heating to electric heating which will help us save ~5900 kgCO2e annually.
Circular economy and sustainable production
We are proud to share that our sondes are some of the most sustainable products in their field due to our material selection, circular economy approach, and use of local suppliers. Based on product weight, 95% of each sonde is either fully recyclable or can be refurbished into a new product. The remaining 5% is disposed of responsibly through carefully selected waste streams. We are constantly working towards increasing our refurbishing capacity, and we actively encourage our customers to return our products for recycling, refurbishing, and responsible disposal at the end of the product life.
Moreover, our sondes are powered by lead-acid rechargeable batteries, rather than single use lithium batteries which are more common in the industry. Where installation allows, we supply small solar panels which can continuously recharge the batteries, meaning these do not need to be transported to be recharged. In addition to being fully rechargeable, our batteries can be responsibly recycled at the end of their lifetime.
All our sondes are manufactured in the UK, with our key suppliers being located within 80 km of our manufacturing point. By utilising local suppliers, we are supporting local businesses whilst minimising the GHG emissions associated with our instrument production. Additionally, all our company vehicles are plug-in hybrids, predominantly charged by renewable energy, meaning that most of our business travel within the UK comes with a minimal carbon footprint. We also provide a free EV charging point for our staff vehicles which is supplied by 100% renewable energy from our energy provider.
Small changes can make a difference
In the recent months, we have paid a lot of attention to the waste which we produce as a company. We make most of the local recycling schemes, and are constantly looking at making small changes that, collectively, can have a large impact.
For example, small appliance battery waste is a growing environmental concern, especially in industries that rely on portable power sources. Previously, our company used single-use batteries, contributing to unnecessary landfill waste. We have now transitioned to rechargeable batteries, significantly cutting down on disposable battery usage.
At the end of their lifespan, all our batteries are responsibly recycled through certified programs. By ensuring proper disposal and material recovery, we prevent hazardous waste from polluting the environment while supporting the circular economy.
Corporate Social Responsibility
Ethical conduct is fundamental to our business. We are committed to transparency, fairness, and accountability in all our operations. Transparency is also fundamental to our sustainability approach. We are committed to openly communicating our progress, challenges, and achievements through regular reporting and self-audits. By evaluating our environmental performance, we can ensure accountability, drive continuous improvement, and stand against greenwashing.
Akubic is committed to conducting business in a responsible and sustainable manner. Our Corporate Social Responsibility policy reflects our dedication to ethical practices, environmental sustainability, and positive community impact. We strive to integrate these principles into our daily operations and long-term strategy. We believe that businesses have a duty to positively impact society. Our approach to social responsibility is focused on creating a supportive and ethical workplace while giving back to the communities in which we operate. This includes promoting a workplace culture which values diversity and ensures equal opportunities for all employees. We invest in training and mentorship to provide our employees with development opportunities whilst providing fair wages and safe and healthy work environment. Moreover, we support local communities through engagement, local projects and participation in local knowledge exchange to drive collective local change in society.
